Many small companies, few large ones
Of the 164,552 industrial companies, 38.4 % have no employees, 41.8 % have 1 to 9, 15.4 % have 10 to 49 and 3.5 % have 50 to 249. Only 0.8 % have 250 or more. Spanish industry is mostly a network of small and medium-sized workshops and factories.
The ERP is there. The work around it is not
Six in ten companies with 10 or more employees use an ERP, more than the EU average. But the ERP does not read e-mail: orders that arrive as PDF, supplier invoices and bank statements still pass through someone's hands before they go in.
E-invoicing is not yet the norm
In 2023, 40.0 % of companies with 10 or more employees sent e-invoices suitable for automated processing, according to Eurostat. It is the latest year with this figure. With mandatory B2B e-invoicing, that figure has to rise in the coming years.
AI reaches industry more slowly
According to the INE, in the first quarter of 2025, 17.5 % of industrial companies with 10 or more employees used AI, against 25.7 % in services and 11.4 % in construction. In industry, the factory floor is often ahead of the office.
